This release includes new features, improvements and bug fixes, including Apple Pay support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, access to iCloud Photo Library beta, and support for SMS messaging on iPad and Mac. UPDATE (25 September): Apple have now banished this update, and released iOS 8.0.2 which replaces this firmware revision. Apple today released iOS 8.0.1, which was quickly pulled shortly after due to user complaints rnging from No Service issues, to Touch ID not functioning. The purpose of the iOS 8.0.1 was ironically to fix a few bugs from the iOS 8.0 update, however it seems like it introduced some new ones. And they're not small bugs either.
