Multimedia Player Apps to Lose AC3 Audio Support.

    Hi Guys,

I've been looking to buy one of these Apps, but then stumbled onto this news. It seems these Apps are losing AC3 Audio support, one after the other. So far "GoodPlayer", "PowerPlayer" and "Buzz Player" have all lost this codec. Apparently the patent holder is asking for a lot of money, hence the removal.

See this link for more info.

So if you use any of these Apps, don't just hit the upgrade button!

    EDIT:
Apps Which Lost AC-3 / E-AC-3 / TrueHD Audio Support:
    -1080 MKV Player Pro
    -Buzz Player HD
    -EC Player
    -eXPlayer HD
    -GoodPlayer
    -GPlayer
    -HD Player Pro
    -It's Playing
    -Movie Player
    -nPlayer
    -OPlayer HD
    -Playable PRO
    -PowerPlayer
    -RushPlayer
    -TTPlayer
    -VM Player HD
    -yaPlayer

Apps Which Have Been Removed From the App Store:
    -ProPlayer

    Apps that still support AC3:
    -AVPlayerHD
    -CineXplayer HD

This is sad. Seems like they might be adding a seperate AIP for the licence. Dolby seems to be wanting a lot of money.

Terrible news! :/ release groups will have to just start using different audio codecs to encode when ripping releases!

GPlayer has also joined this list.
Even weirder, AVPlayerHD, one of the best players around, has been removed from the App store. This happened sometime in late September, so if you have the App, consider yourself lucky.

Check this link for more info.

Dumb question, why do you need AC3 support on your iOS device?

How many people actually plug their devices into a 5.1 A/V Receiver?

As I understand it, some of your video files might be encoded with this codec. So if you try and play it now you will have picture, but no sound.

I'm not an audio/video boffin, so maybe one of the other guys can give a better explanation.

My thought would be that since it can't decode the AC3 stream it would just downmix to a 2.0 codec it has support for.

But since it doesn't support the codec it can't support downmixing from this surely?
