Apple has announced two new iPads at this years event, namely the iPad Air 2 as well as the iPad Mini 3. Here’s the low-down.
iPad Air 2
First off, the new iPad Air 2 is even thinner than before. That’s 6.1mm, compared to the original 7.5mm. It’s also lighter than before – 32 grams lighter to be exact (WiFi model), or 34 grams lighter for the cellular model. The dimensions remain the same as the original iPad Air. Apple claims it’s the “lightest tablet in the world”.
Specs wise, the new iPad Air 2 features Touch ID we are familiar with from the iPhone, an all-new A8X processor, as well as an M8 motion coprocessor giving some serious power under the hood to the new Air. Cameras are upgraded with the all-new iSight and FaceTime HD cameras, faster Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac.) and LTE.
Display-wise, the iPad Air 2 features a laminated optically bonded display that includes an anti-reflective coating that, in theory, should improve outdoor visibility, as well as viewing angles and glare from other light sources. Up to 56% less reflectivity according to Apple.
iPad Mini 3
The iPad Mini 3 features a less drastic change compared to the Air 2, bringing two new features to the table: Touch ID and a gold colour option. It looks almost identical to the iPad Mini 2 otherwise. Probably not quite enough to convince those with the iPad Mini 2 to upgrade. Not to say that Touch ID isn’t a great feature, but perhaps not enough to prompt iPad Mini 2 owners to upgrade just yet.
